James Kim's body found in Oregon wilderness With heart-felt condolences to the Kim family, it saddens me to report that just minutes ago it was confirmed that the body found facedown in the woods in the Oregon wilderness was in fact that of missing CNET Senior Editor James Kim.
The family's Thanksgiving road trip turned into a fight for survival when a wrong turn sent them down a rural mountain road. They ran the engine of their silver Saab station wagon for several days to keep warm, and when they eventually ran out of gas, burned the tires for heat. They only had minor provisions and a few jars of baby food. Kim's wife Kati breast fed both their 7 month old as well as their 4 year old daughter to keep them alive. Kati and the children were dramatically rescued on Monday by a search and rescue helecopter, and were released from hospital after a breif stay to treat frostbite. They are all in good condition, however James had set out on foot Last saturday morning in a last ditch effort to find help. James, who had some experience in the outdoors, set out around 7:45 Saturday morning in search for the main road, and was supposed to turn around and head back to the car by 1:00pm if he did not find it. He never returned. James Kim was a very popular Technology writer for CNET News, and in 2005 was named #258 on on Forbes Top 400 Richest Americans list. Today is a very sad day for both the Kim family, and the electronics, gadgets, and technology fields. |
